Over the years, feral cats have become a bigger problem than ever on Long Island. Living in the woods, under decks, behind restaurants and just about any place imaginable, they are the forgotten cats of our community. The problem begins with a domestic cat, abandoned by irresponsible owners and left to breed and have litter after litter.
Without adequate food and shelter, these new moms
must endure constant obstacles in raising and
protecting their young.
Their kittens grow up and, since they have no human contact, become unsocial and "wild." They continue the breeding process and, within seven years, can produce over 400,000 cats.
According to the Animal Legal and Historical Center, the life expectancy of a feral cat which survives as a kitten is less than two years, while a house cat usually lives from 14 to 20 years.
It's essential for these cats to be spayed, neutered and rereleased. Also, if they are from an unsafe area, they must be relocated to another place where they can find shelter and a clean bowl of food and water. Through Save-A-Pet's C.L.I.F.F.S. Clinic-Feral Cat TNR Program, you can begin a Trap, Neuter and Return program right in your yard or neighborhood. We have affordable, low-cost spay/neuters and vaccinations. The fate of these feral cats and kittens is depending on all of us.
This Mother's Day, Save-A-Pet is asking you to help these innocent victims of human abandonment. These cats deserve our help and depend on us for their safety. If you would like to make a donation in honor of a mother or special person on May 12, please send their name and address to . We will send them an acknowledgement of your generosity and kindness.
